Sarah Everard vigil is cancelled following talks with Met police

A vigil for Sarah Everard scheduled to take place on Saturday night has been cancelled following discussions with police.

Writing on Twitter, organisers Reclaim These Streets, said: “We are sorry to confirm that our Clapham vigil scheduled for tonight is cancelled. Please see the full statement here.

“Instead, we are fundraising £320,000 for women’s causes: £10K for every proposed fine for the 32 vigils originally scheduled.”

In the statement they said: “We have been very disappointed that given the many opportunities to engage with organisers constructively, the Metropolitan Police have been unwilling to commit to anything.

“It remains our view that with the appropriate mutually agreed measures in place, this evening’s vigil on Clapham Common would have been safe and in line with restrictions and safety regulations.”

Reclaim These Streets planned to host the vigil on Clapham Common in south London on Saturday, near to where the 33-year-old, whose body was formally identified on Friday, went missing.

Ms Everard’s body was found in woodland in Kent, after she went missing walking home in south London on March 3.

Serving Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens, 48 was charged on Friday evening with kidnapping and killing the marketing executive.

Ms Everard is thought to have walked through Clapham Common towards her house in Brixton – a journey which should have taken around 50 minutes.

Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the public, with many women and girls sharing stories online of their experience of sexual harassment and violence by men.
